Understanding the problem

A slow or patchy Wi-Fi signal is one of the most common and frustrating home technology problems. The good news is that the cause is almost always one of a small number of things: the router is in a bad location, the wrong frequency band is being used, the wireless channel is congested, or the router simply needs a restart.

Wi-Fi uses radio waves, and radio waves weaken with distance and as they pass through walls, floors and solid objects. The further a device is from the router, or the more obstacles between them, the weaker the signal. That single fact explains most Wi-Fi problems.

Frequency bands add another layer: the 2.4 GHz band reaches further and passes through walls better, while the 5 GHz band is faster but shorter-ranged. A device that is too far away for 5 GHz but locked onto that band will have a consistently poor signal, even if it shows as "connected".

Channel congestion — caused by neighbouring networks using the same slice of radio spectrum — is the other main culprit, particularly in flats, apartments, and dense urban areas. Switching to a less-used channel can double perceived speed without changing anything else.

  1. Step 1: Restart your router and modem

    Unplug the power cable from your router. If your modem is a separate device, unplug that too.

    Wait 60 seconds — this is long enough for all the memory and connection state to fully clear.

    Plug the modem back in first and wait until its lights settle (about 30 seconds), then plug in the router.

    Give the router 2 minutes to fully restart before testing. If speeds and stability improve, a regular weekly restart is worth scheduling — many routers have a built-in reboot timer in their settings.

    Why this works: Routers accumulate connection tables, memory use, and cached state over time. A full power cycle clears all of this and often restores performance without any other changes.

    Expected result: Speeds improve and any random disconnects stop — at least temporarily.

  2. Step 2: Move the router to a central, elevated location

    Wi-Fi signal radiates outward in all directions. A router in a corner covers only a quarter of a home effectively; one in the centre covers all of it.

    Place the router on a shelf, desk, or entertainment unit — never on the floor. Signal travels horizontally better than through floors, so height helps reach adjacent rooms.

    Keep the router out of cabinets, cupboards and drawers. Even a thin wooden cabinet door meaningfully reduces signal.

    Avoid placing the router next to or above a microwave, cordless phone base, or baby monitor — all of these operate on the 2.4 GHz band and cause direct interference.

    Point the antennas vertically if your router has external antennas. For a single-floor home, all antennas straight up is optimal. For a two-storey home, try one vertical and one horizontal.

    Why this works: Placement is the single highest-impact change you can make and costs nothing. A centrally located router in the open can double or triple effective coverage compared to a corner placement.

    Expected result: Noticeably stronger signal in rooms that previously had poor coverage.

  3. Step 3: Check which frequency band your devices are using

    On an iPhone: go to Settings → Wi-Fi → tap the "i" next to your network. The frequency is shown under the network details (iOS 16+).

    On Android: go to Settings → Wi-Fi → tap your connected network. Look for "Frequency" — it shows 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.

    On Windows: open a Command Prompt and type `netsh wlan show interfaces`. Look for the "Radio type" line.

    If a device far from the router is on 5 GHz and experiencing poor signal, switch it to the 2.4 GHz network. Most routers broadcast both under different names (e.g. "HomeWifi" and "HomeWifi_5G") — simply forget the 5 GHz network on that device and connect to the 2.4 GHz one.

    Devices close to the router and needing high speed (laptops for streaming, gaming consoles) benefit from staying on 5 GHz.

    Why this works: 5 GHz is faster but loses signal much more quickly over distance and through walls. A device that is borderline for 5 GHz coverage will have consistently poor performance. Switching to 2.4 GHz for distant devices is an immediate fix.

    Expected result: Distant devices show more stable signal and better throughput after moving to 2.4 GHz.

  4. Step 4: Change your Wi-Fi channel to a less congested one

    Log in to your router's admin page (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in a browser, or via the manufacturer's app). Check the label on your router for the exact address and login credentials.

    Navigate to the Wireless or Wi-Fi settings section. Find the "Channel" setting — it may be under Advanced Wireless or similar.

    For 2.4 GHz: channels 1, 6, and 11 are the only non-overlapping channels. If your router is currently on channel 6 and you are surrounded by neighbours also on channel 6, try channel 1 or 11.

    For 5 GHz: there are many non-overlapping channels. Channels 36, 40, 44, 48 are commonly less congested in residential areas.

    If your router has an "Auto" channel option, enable it — modern routers can detect congestion and switch to a better channel automatically. Disable Auto only if you want to lock to a specific channel.

    Save the settings and wait 30 seconds for the router to apply the change. Reconnect your devices and test.

    Why this works: In dense housing — blocks of flats, townhouses, terraces — every household has a router. When several all use the same channel, they interfere with each other and performance drops for everyone. Moving to a less-used channel avoids that interference.

    Expected result: Speeds improve in congested environments like flats or city apartments. The improvement can be dramatic if neighbours were using the same channel.

  5. Step 5: Reduce interference from other devices

    Microwaves operate at 2.4 GHz and cause significant interference when running. Keep your router away from the kitchen area if possible, or use 5 GHz for devices in the kitchen.

    Cordless phone handsets and their bases use 2.4 GHz. If you have a cordless phone system, keep the base unit away from the router.

    Bluetooth speakers, headphones and smart home devices all share the 2.4 GHz band. While individual Bluetooth devices cause minimal interference, a large number of them in one room can contribute to congestion.

    Large metal objects — filing cabinets, metal shelving units, refrigerators — reflect and absorb Wi-Fi signals. Repositioning the router away from these objects helps.

    Why this works: All these devices share the same radio spectrum as your Wi-Fi. When they transmit, they degrade each other. Separation and band selection are the practical solutions.

    Expected result: Random interference-related drops decrease, particularly in kitchens or rooms with many wireless devices.

  6. Step 6: Consider a mesh system or wired connection for persistent dead zones

    If a room consistently has poor signal despite good router placement — often due to thick concrete walls, a long distance from the router, or a different floor — a single router may not be enough.

    A mesh Wi-Fi system (multiple access points that work as one network) is the most seamless solution. Options include TP-Link Deco, Amazon Eero, Google Nest Wi-Fi and ASUS ZenWiFi. Satellite nodes can be placed in the dead zone area.

    A wired Ethernet connection is always the most reliable alternative. Running a cable from the router to a device like a printer, smart TV or desktop computer removes all wireless variables entirely.

    Powerline adapters (which send network data through your home's electrical wiring) are a middle option — simpler than running cables, though performance varies depending on the wiring quality.

    Why this works: Some buildings simply cannot be covered by a single router. Identifying when you have hit a physical limit saves time compared to endlessly adjusting settings that cannot overcome basic physics.
