Understanding the problem

Wi-Fi problems are among the most common technical issues in any home, yet the same small set of causes accounts for the vast majority of complaints. Understanding which category your problem falls into is the key skill — once you know what type of problem it is, the fix is usually straightforward.

The most important diagnostic split is whether your device is connected to the Wi-Fi network but cannot reach the internet, or whether it cannot connect to the network at all. These are different problems with different causes. A device that shows a Wi-Fi signal but no internet has established the wireless link successfully — the problem is either at the router's connection to your ISP, or in the DNS settings that translate web addresses into IP addresses.

Slow speeds have three main causes: interference and congestion (most common in apartments), wrong band selection (being on 2.4 GHz when you should be on 5 GHz, or vice versa), and physical distance or obstacles between the device and the router. Each has a different remedy. A speed test (at fast.com or speedtest.net) taken right next to the router and then at the device's normal location quickly reveals whether speed is a router problem or a signal strength problem.

Recurring disconnects — devices that keep dropping off the network — are most often caused by a weak signal that is too marginal for a stable connection, or by IP address conflicts where two devices have been assigned the same address. Neither cause gets better on its own, but both have simple fixes.

  • Devices disconnect from Wi-Fi repeatedly throughout the day

    Frequent, unexpected drops that require reconnecting — usually a signal strength or IP conflict problem.

  • Wi-Fi does not reach certain rooms or floors

    Good signal in some areas of the home, dead zones in others — a coverage problem caused by distance, walls or router placement.

  • A specific device cannot connect to Wi-Fi at all

    Other devices connect fine but one device fails — pointing at a band mismatch, a saved wrong password, or a device-specific IP conflict.

  • The Wi-Fi password has been forgotten and the router cannot be accessed

    Cannot add new devices because the password is unknown and there is no way into the admin interface.

ISP outage or modem/router WAN connection failure

The router is working but cannot reach the internet — either the ISP has an outage or the physical connection between the modem and router (or the modem and the wall) is broken.

DNS failure

The internet connection is live but DNS — the service that translates domain names like "google.com" into IP addresses — is not responding. Websites appear unreachable even though the connection is fine.

Weak Wi-Fi signal from distance or obstacles

Walls, floors and distance reduce signal strength below the threshold for a reliable connection, causing slow speeds, disconnects and dead zones.

Channel congestion or interference

In dense areas, many networks share the same Wi-Fi channel, causing interference that reduces effective throughput and causes intermittent drops.

IP address conflict

Two devices on the network have been assigned the same IP address, causing both to disconnect intermittently as the router and devices try to resolve the conflict.

Incorrect band selection for device or distance

A device far from the router on 5 GHz will perform poorly because the signal degrades quickly. A device near the router on congested 2.4 GHz misses the speed advantage of 5 GHz.

    Speed tests at fast.com or speedtest.net show current throughput; the router admin page shows connected devices, DHCP status and channel settings.

  • Router admin credentials

    Usually on the router label. Needed to change channels, check DHCP leases, and review wireless settings.

  • The router's current Wi-Fi password

    If you do not know it, it may be on the router label (if you never changed it) or retrievable from a currently connected device.

Step-by-Step

How to fix it

Work through these in order — they run from the quickest checks to the more advanced fixes.

  1. Step 1: Fix: Connected to Wi-Fi but no internet

    First, determine whether all devices have no internet or just one. If all devices are affected, the problem is the router's connection to your ISP. Check the router's internet/WAN light — if it is red, amber or off, the router cannot reach your ISP. Reboot the modem first (unplug, wait 30 seconds, plug back in), then reboot the router. Wait 2 minutes before testing.

    If the internet light is green but browsing still fails, the connection is live but DNS may be failing. Test by typing "8.8.8.8" directly into a browser — if a page loads (Google's direct IP), DNS is the problem. Change your router's DNS settings to 1.1.1.1 (primary) and 8.8.8.8 (secondary) in the admin interface under Internet or WAN settings.

    If only one device has no internet while others work, the problem is on that device. On Windows, open Command Prompt and run "netsh winsock reset", then restart. On a phone, toggle Wi-Fi off and on, or forget the network and reconnect.

    Why this works: Separating "all devices affected" from "one device affected" immediately splits ISP/router problems from device-specific problems, pointing you to the right fix without unnecessary effort.

    Expected result: All devices can browse the internet. Speed tests show results close to your ISP plan speed.

    If rebooting and DNS changes do not resolve it, check your ISP's outage status page or call their support line — the problem may be on their network, not yours.

  2. Step 2: Fix: Slow Wi-Fi speeds

    Run a speed test on a laptop physically next to the router. If the result is close to your ISP plan speed, the router is fine and slow speeds on other devices are a signal problem. If the result is far below plan speed even next to the router, reboot the router and retest — if still slow, contact your ISP.

    For devices that are slow at distance: move them closer to the router temporarily and retest. If speed improves significantly, distance and walls are the cause. Consider: moving the router to a more central location; switching the device to the 2.4 GHz band for better range; or adding a mesh node or range extender.

    For devices that are slow despite being close to the router: check which band they are on. A device on congested 2.4 GHz near the router should be switched to 5 GHz. In the router admin interface, check the channel your 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios are using — switch to a less congested channel (channels 1, 6, or 11 for 2.4 GHz are the standard non-overlapping options).

    Why this works: Speed problems have different causes depending on whether they occur everywhere (ISP issue) or only at range (signal issue). The next-to-router speed test is the single most useful data point.

    Expected result: Speed tests at the device's normal location show speeds consistent with the router's near-field performance.

  3. Step 3: Fix: Devices that keep disconnecting

    First, check whether the disconnecting device is marginal signal. If it drops when farther from the router and reconnects when closer, signal strength is the cause. Improve it by: moving the router or device, switching to 2.4 GHz if on 5 GHz, or adding a range extender.

    If signal looks strong but drops persist, check for an IP address conflict in the router admin interface. Go to the DHCP client list and look for two entries with the same IP address. If found, reboot both conflicting devices — they will receive new addresses. Prevent recurrence by setting a DHCP reservation for any device that keeps conflicting.

    If disconnects happen to every device at the same time, check the router's event log (in the admin interface under System or Diagnostics) for recurring errors. Overheating routers and routers with faulty firmware often show repeated restart entries. Ensure the router has ventilation and is not in an enclosed space.

    Why this works: Recurring disconnects feel random but almost always have a systematic cause — signal, IP conflict, or router instability. Identifying which one prevents the problem from recurring rather than just reconnecting each time.

    Expected result: Devices maintain a stable connection without repeated drops throughout the day.

  4. Step 4: Fix: Wi-Fi dead zones

    Walk through your home with a phone's Wi-Fi signal indicator visible. Note where the signal drops significantly. This is the dead zone's boundary and tells you which direction from the router the signal is weakest.

    First, try repositioning the router: centrally, elevated (on a shelf), with antennas vertical, away from microwaves, cordless phones and large metal objects. Even moving the router 2–3 metres to a more central position can eliminate dead zones in a smaller home.

    If repositioning is not enough, add a mesh Wi-Fi node (best option — creates a seamless single network) or a range extender (cheaper but creates a separate network that devices must manually switch to). Place the mesh node or extender at the edge of good signal, not in the dead zone — halfway between the router and the dead zone is the optimal position.

    Why this works: Dead zones are physically determined by distance, walls and the router's radiation pattern. Software changes cannot fix them — only changing the physical setup (router position or additional access points) can.

    Expected result: Wi-Fi signal reaches all rooms and floors with enough strength for normal device operation.

  5. Step 5: Fix: Forgotten Wi-Fi password

    If you never changed the default password, it is on the label on the router's base or back, usually alongside the SSID. Check there first.

    If the password was changed and is unknown: on a Windows PC that is already connected, go to Control Panel → Network and Sharing Centre → the network name → Wireless Properties → Security tab → check "Show characters". The password appears in the Network security key field.

    On a Mac already connected: open Keychain Access (search in Spotlight), find your Wi-Fi network name, double-click it, and tick "Show password". You'll need to enter your Mac password to reveal it. On an iPhone/iPad connected to the same Wi-Fi, go to Settings → Wi-Fi → tap the (i) next to the network name → Password.

    Why this works: A forgotten password does not require a factory reset if any currently connected device can reveal it. The factory reset is a last resort that wipes all router configuration.

    Expected result: You have the current Wi-Fi password and can connect new devices to the network.

    If no connected device is available, the last resort is a factory reset (hold the reset button for 10 seconds) which restores the default password from the router label — but also resets all custom settings.

  6. Step 6: Fix: A specific device cannot connect to Wi-Fi

    On the device, forget the Wi-Fi network (in the device's Wi-Fi settings, select the network and choose Forget or Remove). Then reconnect fresh by selecting the network and entering the password. This clears any cached incorrect credentials.

    If the device still cannot find the network: confirm it supports the band being broadcast. An older device that only supports 2.4 GHz will not find a 5 GHz-only network. Check the device's specifications if unsure.

    If the device can see the network but the password is rejected: double-check the password character by character. If your router uses WPA3 and the device is old, switch the router to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode (sometimes called "Transitional") in the wireless security settings — older devices cannot negotiate WPA3.

    Why this works: Device-specific connection failures are usually one of three things: a cached bad credential, a band mismatch, or a security protocol mismatch. Each has a distinct fix that does not require changing the network for all other devices.

    Expected result: The device connects to the Wi-Fi network and can access the internet normally.
